The basics

How carrier unlocking works

A carrier lock can limit which mobile networks accept a phone's SIM or eSIM. The carrier that applied the lock is usually the best place to start.

Carrier unlocks, in brief

Carriers use device and account rules to decide whether a phone can be unlocked for use on another compatible network. Requirements differ by country, carrier, plan, and device history. A phone being paid off is common, but not the only possible requirement.

Steps to take

  1. Identify the original carrier and account holder, if known.
  2. Check the carrier's current unlock policy and any outstanding device balance.
  3. Ask the carrier to confirm eligibility and submit its official unlock request.
  4. Follow the carrier's instructions to finish the unlock and test a compatible SIM or eSIM.

Different kinds of locks

A carrier/SIM lock is different from a screen passcode, Apple Activation Lock, Google Factory Reset Protection, or a financing/account restriction. A carrier unlock does not remove another person's account lock or prove ownership.

Protect your information

Do not share your Apple or Google password, carrier account password, one-time verification code, or remote access to your device. Start with the carrier's official support channel. Avoid services that promise to bypass ownership checks or account protections.

Pre-launch notice

MobileUnlock is preparing an eligibility-review service. Provider coverage is not confirmed and paid orders are not open. The planned €9.99 price and 24-hour target apply only if the future service can support a specific check; neither is currently a live offer.
